WMYSA Coaches Fall Meeting August 27

The Fall 2011 WMYSA Coaches meeting is Monday August 27th at 7:00-9:15 pm in the KVCC auditorium (Dale B. Lake auditorium).

This year there be three presentations that should be beneficial to all team officials:

1. Dr. James VanHuysen from Bronson Orthopedics & Sports Medicine will give a presentation about proper warm-ups techniques and training to help avoid ACL and MCL injuries. He will discuss some insight in the types of soccer injuries in the Kalamazoo/Portage area and will also include a discussion about concussions in young athletes. Dr. James T. VanHuysen is a graduate of Portage Northern High School in Portage, Michigan. He played travel soccer at TKO. Dr. VanHuysen's fellowship in Sports Medicine was at Michigan State University/Edward Sparrow Hospital.

2. WMYSA Vice President Ken Pope will give a presentation on the new Player Pass Program. This presentation is a must for every head coach to know and understand to ensure it is used correctly. This is a chance to ask questions about how this can be used for league games including Elite play.

3. WMYSA President Scott Winegarden will give a presentation developed by US Youth Soccer titled "Coaches - Important People Protecting Our Players". This presentation will include recommendations for coach/player interactions including social media.

All coaches are expected to attend. Team envelopes with cards and rosters will be available for pickup, packets will only be distributed to one of the team's listed officials, otherwise packets can only be picked up the Club president or club board member. Packets will not be given to other team's coaches or parents.

Any team unable to attend should contact their club president or WMYSA representative to make arrangements for team envelope pickup.

WMYSA Coaching Clinic for U8-U14 Youth Soccer Team Coaches

Coaching development is very important to WMYSA. It is important to invest in coaching development to provide a better environment for our players to learn, grow and have fun.

Therefore, WMYSA has arranged for a the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) to provide a "Improving First Touch and Decision-making" clinic right here in our WMYSA area. This clinic is targeted for U8 Academy through U14 coaches. The clinic will be held on Tuesday, March 6th from 7:00 till 10:00 at the Kingdom Indoor Center. (8151 Merchants Place, Portage). Thanks goes out to the Kingdom Indoor Center who has donated the use of their facility. The clinic will be run by MSYSA clinician Patrick Moran.

This clinic is free to WMYSA registered coaches. For planning purposes please RSVP through Got Soccer. The clinic will have field components so please dress appropriately to participate on the Kingdom indoor turf.

Clinician Patrick Moran is very experienced and will provide a wealth of information to help you coach small-sided youth soccer. Clinician Moran has been a State Staff instructional coach since 1998, licensing over 1,400 Michigan Coaches. He is a Nationally Licensed by USSF coach. He has been active in the Olympic Development Program (ODP) being the ODP 101 West Director and an ODP age group head coach, Coach Moran has been a head coach for Recreation, Academy, Select, Premier and High School soccer teams. He is competitive soccer club director coaching. He is a published author of Soccer books and articles and has a BS in Exercise Physiology, with a minor in Coaching.

Winter WMYSA Presidents Meeting

WMYSA Presidents,

This is a reminder to that WMYSA will be having the Winter President’s meeting on Tuesday, January 24th from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The meeting will be held on the lower level at the office of Edward Rose, 6101 Newport Road, Portage, MI 49002. The WMYSA board is requesting someone from each member club attend the meeting. We hope to see all the club presidents and community reps there.

E License Course to be held in WMYSA

WMYSA is pleased to announce that this fall MSYSA will hold a USSF E License Coaching Class within the WMYSA area. Thank you to Chris Haack for arranging this course.

This is a great opportunity to get a USSF E Coaching License with minimal travel. WMYSA requires that all WMYSA registered coaches have an E License (this is expected to be completed within one year of coaching in WMYSA).

The location of this class will be the St. Joe Kickers club in Berrien Springs, MI. The class will be held on Saturday November 12th and Sunday November 13th from 9am to 5 pm each day. This class is open now so please register quickly to ensure your spot before others in the state get reminders of this class and the class fills up - there are a limited number of seats available.

♦IMPORTANT♦ The E-license class now has a pre-requisite online coaching module. The certificate from this class is needed for participation in the E License class. This online coaching module is designed to have the majority of the class room instruction in it from the E license class. The E license class now has more time on field instruction and reduced class room lecture time.

WMYSA U8/U7 Academy 1st Season Fall 2009

WMYSA U7/U8 Academy kicks off this Fall with a lot of fun and player developement.

The WMSYA Academy is in full swing this fall. Five clubs have formed Academy groups. These clubs have one or two player development sessions per week. Each club Academy then can particpate in three WMYSA Academy Jamboreees. These Jamboree's offer the U7/U8 player an opportunity to experience to play 9 matches against other club's Academy teams over only three Sunday afternoons. The Jamboree's are played at Portage, Rockey Weed and River Oak therefore the Academy teams get a taste of the Select league travel and competition. At each Jamboree a player plays three matches.

Players and Parents are having a GREAT TIME.

WMYSA (together with MSYSA) administers 4 types of Special Requests. These are:

Player releases
Player transfers
Dual rosters
Play-up requests of more than one year

WMYSA has adopted going forward the following rules related to each type of request.

WMYSA Academy Fall 2009

WMYSA to begin U8 Development Academy in Fall 2009.

Club committment date for participating in the Academy is August 1, if possible let Gil Urtban gilurban@aol.com know sooner. The Academy is focused on introducing U8/U7 age appropriate players to better player development and to competive soccer. The primary purpose is to provide a learning environment for skills development of young players. There will also be three WMYSA facilitated Jamboree Sunday's for Academy club teams. At each Jamboree the teams will play 2 or 3 small sided 4 v 4 scrimmage matches.

WMYSA Annouces Plans for Fall 2009 U8 Academy

Status for Spring 2009

There was a limited number of member clubs that created Academy teams and/or rostered players using the single Academy registration process. WMSYA believes that the creation of the next stage – a formal academy pilot program – is not justified based on current participation numbers. There will be no changes to Academy program within WMYSA for spring 2009.

Early Planning

The 2008 timing of the decision by WMYSA to create the academy concept did not allow all clubs time to adequately plan and develop a club strategy to effectively create academy teams for the 2008/2009 season. By working to create a structure and organization now, WMYSA and its member clubs can create a program that will allow those interested clubs to take advantage of the Academy concept if they so choose.

Fee and Process Changes for 2008/2009 Season

Fee Changes:

Fee of $40 for scheduling a coach requesting integration of two separate division schedules per season. The fee would be $100 for integration of three teams.
Fee of $100 for add and $125 for drop of a team after the team commitment deadline.
Increase the game reschedule fee to $40 for requests within 5 days of a scheduled game or a new rescheduled date. The fee would remain at $25 for requests made earlier.
U8 Training Squad player registration is $12.50.

Procedure Changes:

Registration Changes: Move the date for “Late Registration Designation” to 5 days prior to the projected date for distribution of team envelopes. Impose the existing late fee of $15 on incomplete registrations
Dual Roster Change: No discount will be given for the secondary team registration of a dual roster player.
Registration Fee Payment Due Date Change: The club team’s registration fee is due by April 30 or September 30 for spring and fall seasons respectfully. A 2% per week penalty fee will be charged for late fee payment.

WMYSA Vision for going from Good to Great

A new vision for a new WMYSA has been developed over the last 6-8 months by a WMYSA subcommittee and the WMYSA Board. It was presented to Club Presidents & Community Reps February 16, and to WMYSA membership in general February 28. A written document describing the plan as approved by the WMYSA Board is available and contains details that the WMYSA Board will now be implementing in a stagewise fashion.
